This is a vintage box used for I believe mailing jewelry or silver items back to the maker for repair. I looked up Holmes and he was a jeweler or silversmith back in the UK around the 1900s. The EMPTY box has metal reinforcers at the corners and opens and shuts well. I have no idea what it was used for but with the printing on the top that's what my research has shown.
