Based upon the novel by Peter Hedges, a young man (Johnny Depp) in a small Midwestern town struggles to care for his mentally-disabled younger brother (Leonardo DiCaprio) and morbidly obese mother (Darlene Cates) while attempting to pursue his own happiness. The cast includes Juliette Lewis, Mary Steenburgen, Laura Harrington, Mary Kate Schellhardt, Kevin Tighe, John C. Reilly, Crispin Glover, and Penelope Branning. The design features a black-and-white exterior shot of a quiet small-town street as Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp) looks at something off-camera.
