This is an original masterpiece Buddha Life or the wheel of life Bhavachakra Mandala Thangka painting. This is an old Thangka painting varnished with oil. A thin layer of oil is applied in order to protect and thangka and increase its durability.
The Wheel of Life Mandala, also known as the Bhavacakra or
Samsara Chakra, is a symbolic representation found in Tibetan Buddhism and
other Buddhist traditions. It illustrates the cycle of existence, suffering,
and the path to enlightenment. The mandala is typically depicted as a circle
divided into several sections or rings, each of which contains various symbolic
elements. Here's an overview of its key components:
Central Hub: At the center of the mandala is a depiction of
a pig, a snake, and a rooster, symbolizing ignorance, aversion, and attachment,
respectively. These represent the three poisons that keep beings trapped in the
cycle of samsara (the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth).
Outer Ring: The outermost ring contains twelve segments,
each representing one of the twelve links in the chain of dependent
origination, which explains how suffering arises. These links include
ignorance, karmic formations, consciousness, name and form, senses, contact,
feeling, craving, grasping, becoming, birth, and aging and death.
Second Ring: This ring is divided into two halves,
illustrating the six realms of existence within samsara. These realms are the
realms of gods, demigods, humans, animals, hungry ghosts, and hell beings.
Beings are believed to cycle through these realms based on their karma
(actions) and the quality of their lives.
Third Ring: Surrounding the second ring, there are images
representing the twelve links of dependent origination again, but this time
they are arranged in a circular fashion, illustrating the cyclical nature of
suffering.
Fourth Ring: This ring typically depicts a Buddha or
Bodhisattva figure pointing to a moon or a sun. This symbolizes the possibility
of liberation from samsara through the wisdom and compassion of enlightened beings
and the teachings of Buddhism.
Outermost Ring: The outermost ring often contains a fiery
border, representing the fiery passions and suffering that beings experience in
samsara.
The Wheel of Life Mandala serves as a visual aid and
teaching tool, reminding practitioners of the impermanence of life, the causes
of suffering, and the path to liberation from the cycle of birth and death.
Meditating on or studying this mandala helps individuals reflect on their own
existence and their spiritual journey toward enlightenment in Buddhist
practice.
