A true craftsman, who processed yarns into rope along a ropewalk. His name would forever be linked to this shop, which grew into a company in ship supplies and related items. His house can be seen in a painting by Isaac Ouwater (1750-1793) ?View of the Singel and the Munttoren?. It gives an idea of ??what his surroundings looked like at the time. All around beautiful houses and here and there a few walkers. An elegant carriage drawn by two white horses with a groom that goes up the narrow bridge between the Singel and the Binnen-Amstel. On the water it is much busier with sailing ships and cargo boats. Of course they all needed rope. Until the middle of the twentieth century there was still a harbour here. Now, after more than two centuries, the surroundings have changed radically. Andries de Jong's four-storey shop is located at the end of the busiest part of the Singelgracht and, with one exception, on the corner of Kalverstraat. The narrow bridge of yesteryear became the widest bridge in Amsterdam, the current Muntplein, due to various extensions. Traffic rushes past here from all sides, drowned out every quarter by the jubilant sounds of the carillon of the Munttoren. The flower market has been on the other side since 1862. All these changes took place right in front of the door of this special shop. In 1847, Andries de Jong Jr. transferred the rope-making shop to his brother-in-law G. Blokhuis and to Johan Lodewijk Krom. The latter heralded the Krom period, which continues to this day. Now it is Ian Krom, the 5th generation of the family who runs the business and the 7th generation in a row of owners since its foundation. Over time, Andries de Jong became a supplier of tarred and untarred ropes, hoisting blocks, anchors, steel wire rope, packing and binding rope, ship supplies and brass bar and stair railings for use in the catering industry.
