HOW TO GROW CLIMBING VINES
NASTURTIUM PLANTING GUIDE
About Nasturtium
Beautiful and beneficial, Nasturtiums are often planted as companions to vegetables as they can help to repel harmful pests. Not only do Nasturtiums produce gorgeous blooms- the blooms are also edible and have a peppery, almost mustard-like taste.
Where to Plant Nasturtium Seeds
Nasturtiums perform best in full sun, in average, slightly acidic, well-drained soils. Light shade is tolerated in hot summer areas. Nasturtiums do better in soil of moderate to low fertility.
When to Plant Nasturtium Seeds
Sow seeds outdoors after all danger of frost has passed or indoors 4-6 weeks prior to the last spring frost date.
How to Plant Nasturtium Seeds
Before planting, we recommend soaking seeds for four to eight hours to encourage germination. Learn more about here.
Sow seeds about 1/2" deep and 10-12" apart in the garden if direct sowing. If starting indoors, transplant after seedlings emerge, after 7-10 days, and space as you would if direct sowing.
How to Care for Nasturtium
Water regularly throughout the growing season, but be careful not to overwater. Deadhead your plants to prolong blooming. If maintaining your nasturtiums in containers, they'll need to be trimmed back occasionally to promote new foliage. Leaves and flowers can be harvested anytime, using scissors to avoid damaging the plants.
SWEET PEA PLANTING GUIDE
When to Plant Sweet Pea Seeds
In temperate regions, where frosts occur, sow Sweet Pea seeds in late Winter or early Spring, just as soon as the soil is able to be worked - don't wait until the threat of frost has passed. In milder climates that don't experience a frost, sow seeds in late Fall, for early Spring blooms.
Where to Plant Sweet Pea Seeds
Sweet Peas require fertile, well-drained soil in order to thrive. 6 weeks before planting, dig a trench and re-fill with well-decomposed compost or manure where you will sow your seeds. Sweet Peas prefer Full Sun conditions, but also cool, moist, well-draining soil.
How to Plant Sweet Pea Seeds
Sweet Pea seeds require scarification prior to planting. This is a simple process that involves nicking the seeds with a knife or rubbing them with sandpaper or a file. Learn more about the importance of scarification here.
Before planting, you must soak Sweet Pea seeds for 24 hours to encourage germination. Learn more about here.
Soak your seeds overnight to soften that hard exterior of Sweet Pea seeds, or use a sharp knife to nick the exterior shell to help increase your chances for germination. Make holes in the trench with a pencil, and drop your seeds into the hole. Press down on the soil in order to cover. Germination will take place in 7-15 days.
How to Care for Sweet Peas
As Sweet Pea seedlings emerge, continue to fill the trench with additional soil. Ensure that soil remains adequately moist. If additional fertilizer is needed, ensure that you select varieties that feature a higher phosphorus content, as nitrogen heavy fertilizers will suppress flowering and encourage green growth. Deadheading spent flowers will encourage additional blooms. Also ensure to provide supports, such as trellises, as Sweet Peas are noted climbers. At approximately, 4 inches high, pinch off the middle-growing tip to encourage a sturdier development for your Sweet Peas as they mature. Once established, mulching will help keep your Sweet Pea roots cool, however, they will tend to fade once temperatures get to 65F or higher.
MORNING GLORY PLANTING GUIDE
When to Plant Morning Glory Seeds
Seeds can be directly sown once soil temperatures are 65 degrees or above, or started indoors 4-6 weeks before the final frost date for your area.
Where to Plant Morning Glory Seeds
Morning Glory plants prefer full sun so be sure to pick an area that has direct sunlight for 6-8 hours.
How to Plant Morning Glory Seeds
Morning Glory seeds will benefit from scarification prior to planting. This is a simple process that involves nicking the seeds with a knife or rubbing them with sandpaper or a file. Learn more about the benefits of scarification here.
Before planting, we recommend soaking Morning Glory seeds for 24 hours to encourage germination. Learn more about here.
To scarify, you may nick the seeds with a knife, or rub the seeds with sandpaper or a file. Then soak the seeds overnight. Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep and provide 8-12" spacing between plants. Once vines reach 6 inches, provide trellis support unless planted in hanging planter in which case you can leave it to spill over.
How to Care for Morning Glory
Water weekly at first or when the soil looks dry. Once established, only water as needed. Remove any spent blooms as they appear and at the first sign of killing frost, cut back dead vines.
